Rare autochrome by amateur Lebanese photographer

Stereoscopic autochrome
Aziz Zabbal
Collection: AIF / Roberte Zabbal Sawaya
© Arab Image Foundation

This stereoscopic autochrome is one of many stereoscopic black-and-white glass plates from the collection of Aziz Zabbal, an amateur Lebanese photographer. Autochromes, one of the earliest color processes, were developed and marketed in an attempt to make color photography available to the wide public. While the location and date of this photograph haven't been identified yet, autochromes were mostly available between 1907 and 1935 and were a rare process in the Arab world.

Simple in its essentials, the autochrome glass plate is basically a layer of dyed starch granules covered with a black-and-white photographic emulsion and varnished. This autochrome in particular was not varnished, resulting in a purple dye bleed over time.

Here and Elsewhere
16 July - 28 September 2014
New Museum, 235 Bowery, New York, NY 10002, United States

Curated by Massimiliano Gioni, "Here and Elsewhere" is a disparate collection of works of more than forty-five artists from the Arab world. Rather than creating a display of regionally associated artistic productions, the exhibition highlights the roles of images and elements of fiction in the re-telling of particular histories.

Features the works of several AIF members including Hrair Sarkissian and Akram Zaatari presenting the photographs of Hashem El Madani. Exhibition catalogue edited by Kaelen Wilson-Goldie and AIF member Negar Azimi.

Publication / Crowd-funding campaign
A Lebanese Archive
Pledging ends 27 September 2014

Diab Alkarssifi with a friend in the 1980s, Diab Alkarssifi

Polish artist Ania Dabrowska was running a photography workshop in a hostel in London, when she met former photo-journalist Diab Alkarssifi, a native of the Bekaa, Lebanon. Their forged friendship eventually lead Alkarssifi to reveal a life-long collection of his works. The retrieved archive of around 27,000 photographs spans over a century, and depicts a social history of ordinary life in Lebanon as well as family albums, commercial photographic portraits, passport photographs and snapshots.

The book will be co-published by Book Works and the Arab Image Foundation and is set for release by spring 2015.
The photographic collection of Diab Alkarssifi will eventually be housed at the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut.

Lara Baladi receives fellowship from MIT's Open Documentary Lab
Fall 2014 - Spring 2015

During the 2011 Egyptian uprising, multi-disciplinary artist and AIF board member Lara Baladi accumulated a massive digital archive of YouTube videos, images, press articles and more, that documented the events on the ground and around the world. The growing archive has resulted in two media initiatives in Tahrir Square: Radio Tahrir and Tahrir Cinema, which the artist co-founded and a series of works, such as the video installation Alone, Together…In Media Res, that propose a meaningful reading of chaos.

For the coming Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters, Lara Baladi received a fellowship from the OpenDocLab at MIT University (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to continue working with her archive and create a trans-media project titled, Archiving a Revolution in the Digital Age.
